former vs latter
Meaning, usage, and examples
When exactly two things have just been named, the former is the first and the latter is the second. Both can also have broader adjective meanings.
How to choose
Track the original order
Write the two choices in sequence, then point former backward to number one and latter to number two.
First of two: former
Use former only for the first item when referring back to a pair.
Between tea and coffee, I prefer the former.
Second of two: latter
Use latter only for the second item when referring back to a pair.
We could travel Friday or Saturday; the latter is easier.
Repeat names when clarity suffers
In a long or technical sentence, repeating the item is often clearer than former or latter.
Choose “Saturday” instead of “the latter” if the alternatives are far away.

What is the difference?
Use the former to refer back to the first of two previously mentioned people or things, and the latter for the second. This structure becomes hard to follow with long or complex lists, and it should not be stretched beyond two items. As adjectives, former can mean previous, while latter can mean later or nearer the end.
